(High resolution version of this image for printing purposes available in "All Sizes") Also check out my other illustration on A/H1N1: www.flickr.com/photos/benheine/3750074165/ Influenza A virus subtype H1N1, also known as A(H1N1), is a subtype of influenza virus A and the most common cause of influenza (flu) in humans. Some strains of H1N1 are endemic in humans, including the strain(s) responsible for the 1918 flu pandemic which killed 50–100 million people worldwide. Less virulent H1N1 strains still exist in the wild today, worldwide, causing a small fraction of all influenza-like illness and a large fraction of all seasonal influenza. H1N1 strains caused roughly half of all flu infections in 2006. Other strains of H1N1 are endemic in pigs and in birds. In March and April 2009, hundreds of laboratory-confirmed infections and a number of deaths were caused by an outbreak of a new strain of H1N1. ------------- H1N1 Swine Flu: Barack Obama and the First Deadly Mistake By Lifegen.de The H1N1 swine flu hits the US, and for the first time President Barack Obama seems to make a deadly mistake: A disease spread simulation has emphasized that flu interventions must be imposed quickly, if they are to be effective. Researchers writing in the open access journal BMC Public Health have shown that staying at home, closing schools and isolating infected people within the home should reduce infection, but only if they are used in combination, activated without delay and maintained for a relatively long period. The President should have acted by enforcing social separation - but economic items seem to be more important. What all the President's men should have known: Professor George Milne and his colleagues from the University of Western Australia (UWA) simulated the effect of social distancing on the spread of a flu virus within a small town. Their research used a detailed, individual-based model of a real community with a population of approximately 30,000 (Albany, Australia) using simulation software engineered by UWA's Dr Joel Kelso. Milne said, "Our results suggest a critical role of combined social distancing measures in the potential control of a future pandemic. Non-pharmaceutical social distancing interventions are capable of preventing less-infectious influenza epidemics and of significantly reducing the rate of development and overall burden of the worst epidemics". The research investigated the effects, alone and in combination, of workplace non-attendance, school closure, isolating infected family members inside the home and reducing contact within the wider community. According to Milne, "While such draconian measures seem unlikely to be mandated given their impact on personal freedom, they appear to have a key role to play in delaying the development of a 'worst case' influenza epidemic. They may be critical in holding back an epidemic until vaccines are deployed on a sufficient scale that subsequent relaxation of these rigorous measures will not result in a consequential acceleration in the scale of the outbreak". The measures described must, however, be employed as soon as possible after the first individuals within the population have been infected, if not preemptively. This study found that, for an outbreak of influenza approximately as infectious as the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, the combination of all intervention measures must be introduced within 2 weeks of the first case appearing in a town or city, to prevent an epidemic developing. Delays of 2, 3 and 4 weeks resulted in final attack rates of 7%, 21% and 45% respectively. Milne concludes, "Social distancing interventions are important as they represent the only type of intervention measure guaranteed to be available against a novel strain of influenza in the early phases of a pandemic. They may be readily activated and thought of as a first line of defence in developing and developed countries alike". ------------ --> This article appeared on www.lifegen.de/

http://www.prisonplanet.com SPECIAL REPORTSwine Flu Is Deadly Mix Of Never-Before-Seen VirusesSwine flu panic is spreading in Mexico and soldiers are patrolling the streets after it was confirmed that human to human transmission is occurring and that the virus is a brand new strain which is seemingly affecting young, healthy people the worst, and that the bug is a never-before-seen intercontinental mixture of human, avian and pig viruses from America, Europe and Asia.Clues that the virus may be a synthetic creation are already manifesting.According to reports, the virus is a "never-before-seen form of the flu that combines pig, bird, and human viruses" which consists of an intercontinental mix of viruses from North America, Europe, and Asia."CDC officials detected a virus with a unique combination of gene segments that have not been seen in people or pigs before, "according to an Associated Press report."This strain of swine influenza that's been cultured in a laboratory is something that's not been seen anywhere actually in the United States and the world, so this is actually a new strain of influenza that's been identified," said Dr. John Carlo, Dallas Co. Medical DirectorAlarming reports are now filtering in about people catching the illness who had no contact with pigs whatsoever. These include a man and his daughter in San Diego County, a 41-year-old woman in Imperial County and two teenagers in San Antonio, Texas. In fact, in all U.S. cases, the victims had no contact with any pigs.Dr. Wilma Wooten, San Diego County's public health office, told KPBS: "We have had person-to-person spread with the father and daughter, and also with the two teenagers in Texas, they were in the same school. So that also indicates person-to-person transfer."Dr. Wooten says it's unclear how people were exposed to swine flu. She says none of the patients have had any contact with pigs," according to the report.Although the situation in the U.S. looks under control, panic is spreading in Mexico, where over 800 cases of pneumonia in the capital alone are suspected to be related to the swine flu and the now called H1N1 virus has hit young and healthy people, which is very rare with a flu outbreak. Despite the danger of a pandemic, the U.S. border with Mexico remains open."Mexico has shut schools and museums and canceled hundreds of public events in its sprawling, overcrowded capital of 20 million people to try to prevent further infections," reported Reuters."My level of concern is significant," said Dr. Martin Fenstersheib, the health officer for Santa Clara County. "We have a novel virus, a brand-new strain that's spreading human to human, and we are also seeing a virulent strain in Mexico that seems to be related. We certainly have concerns for this escalating."The WHO insists that the outbreak has "pandemic potential" and has been stockpiling suppliess of Tamiflu, known generically as oseltamivir, a pill that can both treat flu and prevent infection, according to officials. Those that have a stake in the Tamiflu vaccine include top globalists and Bilderberg members like George Shultz, Lodewijk J.R. de Vink and former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.Indeed, Rumsfeld himself played a key role in hyping an outbreak of swine flu back in 1976 when he urged the entire country to get vaccinated. Many batches of the vaccine were contaminated, resulting in hundreds of sick people and 52 fatalities. The fact that the properties of the strain are completely new, that the virus is spreading from people to people, and that the young and healthy are being hit worst, has disturbing parallels to the deadly 1918 pandemic that killed millions. It is unclear as to why, if the virus is a brand new strain, that public health officials are so confident programs of mass vaccination, which are already being prepared, would necessarily be effective. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that deadly flu viruses have been concocted in labs and then dispatched with the intention of creating a pandemic. When the story first broke last month, Czech newspapers questioned if the shocking discovery of vaccines contaminated with the deadly avian flu virus which were distributed to 18 countries by the American company Baxter were part of a conspiracy to provoke a pandemic.Since the probability of mixing a live virus biological weapon with vaccine material by accident is virtually impossible, this leaves no other explanation than that the contamination was a deliberate attempt to weaponize the H5N1 virus to its most potent extreme and distribute it via conventional flu vaccines to the population who would then infect others to a devastating degree as the disease went airborne.Howver, this is not the first time that vaccine companies have been caught distributing vaccines contaminated with deadly viruses.

H1n1 Information

Photo stolen while taking a tour of the Sugar Loaf Mountain (Rio de Janeiro), one of the most touristic places in Latin America. A whole family, at the exception of the father, was wearing protection mask. I was hitching to take a picture of the youngest boy. The hardest part was obviously to remain un-noticed to avoid offending or provoking non-natural behavior. I thought this picture was so much reflecting the actuality that I wanted to share it on flickr. This actuality has several names: Grippe porcine Grippe A Swine flu Gripe suína Influenza A H1N1 June 11th of 2009, the World Health Organization declared a global flu pandemic. It is the first flu pandemic in 40 years, the last in 1968 killed about one million people. July the 1st, in terms of numbers, the worldwide situation is worrying indeed with more than 77'000 confirmed cases and more than 330 deaths. United States of America being on top of the list followed by Mexico where the H1N1 virus first emerged in April. Since then the virus spread to 74 countries. Now regarding the masks protection, Dr Ronald Cutler – deputy director of biomedical science at the University of London – says: "They are not bio-chemical suits. Masks are obviously just covering one part of the body so your hands and clothes could all have the virus on and when you take them off you will infect yourself. Because people are wearing a mask they think they are protected and may go into crowded areas. The best advice is to wash your hands and cover your mouth when sneezing."

United Nations, New York, 29 April 2009 - Daily Briefing by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. The World Health Organization (WHO) just wrapped up a telephone press conference on the H1N1 Influenza (swine flu). The agency confirmed that there has been an increase in lab-confirmed cases from 79 yesterday to 114 today. The infections have been reported in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Israel, Spain, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.WHO also noted that the virus is spreading, with no evidence of slowing down. Regarding its influenza pandemic alert level, which was raised to phase 4 on Monday, WHO said that we are moving closer to phase 5 but are not there yet. Before raising the alert level again, WHO said it would need to make sure that it was dealing with sustained human to human transmission, with widespread community outbreaks, in at least two regions.Noting that the virus did originate in pigs, WHO stressed that there is no evidence that people are now getting sick from pigs or pork products. The agency also noted that many countries have increased surveillance activities, as it recommended a few days ago.WHO emphasized that experts are continuing to study the situation and that there are still unanswered questions. For example, it is currently unclear whether people, upon becoming infected, will develop mild or severe illness.

(High resolution version of this image for printing purposes available in "All Sizes") Africa's Expectations from Obama By Hany Besada (*) WITH the US administration marking its 100 days in office, Barack Obama has raised sky-scraping expectations for his term as president, not only at home in the US, but also abroad in Africa. The 44th American President is the first with an African lineage and, not surprisingly, his rise to power has triggered a wave of hope amongst Africans as they look towards the West in anticipation of new beginnings in US foreign policy and diplomatic relations. Examples of African reverence for Obama abound. Kenya has declared 5 November a national holiday in recognition of Obama's election. Parallels were drawn world-wide between Obama's inauguration ceremony in Washington earlier this year, as being eerily reminiscent in scale and scope of Nelson Mandela's inauguration as South Africa's first black president in 1994. Will President Barack Obama be able to deliver in accordance with the super-hero status that Africans are bestowing on him? In the coming months, Obama will be expected to address Africa's most pressing crises: Sudan's six-year conflict in Darfur continues unabated with UN forces being woefully understaffed and underfunded, despite former President Bush labeling it as "genocide"; Somalia has now been without a central government for 18 years and has lost more than one million people to civil conflict and famine; and the Democratic Republic of the Congo is struggling to end a five-year conflict with a death toll deemed the world's highest since World War II. And, of course, there are the longstanding issues across the continent of food security, corruption, access to clean water and basic health care, and the looming threat of climate change. There will be some tough decisions ahead in deciding on priorities and whether to drill down on development or security. If the President remains true to the objectives identified in his election campaign, then three items could be expected on his African agenda: accelerate Africa's integration into the global economy; enhance peace and security in Africa; and strengthen relations with African governments to deepen democracy and accountability. Already, Obama is making strides towards building good relations with Africa. In recent weeks, the President has surrounded himself with top African advisers —foremost amongst them is the appointment of Susan Rice, former Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs in the Clinton administration, to the post of UN Ambassador. Obama had been in touch with South Africa's former interim President Kaglema Motlanthe about the ongoing political crisis in Zimbabwe. But there are a number of factors working against him. No doubt the President's first loyalty is to serve the needs and heed the priorities of the American people and, as the global financial crisis persists, his ability to deliver on foreign priorities above domestic ones will become increasingly constrained. Some critics even go as far as saying that it would be difficult for Obama to leave the kind of African legacy that his predecessor did given the many other foreign policy priorities of the day, notably Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle East crisis among others. With all the domestic failures and foreign policy blunders that undermined his creditability while in office, earning him the lowest approval rating in recent memory, former US President George Bush could confidently point to his widely deserved and often ignored achievements in Africa. The Bush administration devoted major attention in recent years to supporting Africa's battle to contain the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the devastating effects of malaria. His President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (Pepfar), described as a revolution, in the sense that it radically altered the administration of healthcare on the continent, has been described as the largest ever global initiative dedicated to tackling a single disease. Since 2003, it provided $15 billion ( $10 billion in new money) to fund desperately needed drugs to more than 1.4 million people who would not have been able to afford them. This has had a tremendous impact on increasing access to AIDS treatment on the African continent. Under the Bush administration, aid to Africa increased to more than $5.6 billion in 2008, from $1.3 billion in 2001. Bush introduced a less bureaucratic Millennium Challenge Account (MCA), targeted at a select group of countries. Using a 16-point indicator, this bilateral development aid fund is aimed at countries that satisfy various criteria, pertaining to free-market economic policies, democratic governance and anti-corruption reforms. Supporters point out that all of these were instrumental in ushering in a new level in African-US relations, namely one based on investment and trade, rather than on aid alone. In any event, it is unhelpful to speculate as to whether Obama will match Bush's achievements in Africa and meet the enormous expectations of Africans over the coming period. Time will tell as to how Africa will come to judge the Obama administration. What is certain, however, is that Africa is too important to be ignored. The continent is slowly attempting to improve it efforts to govern itself; to resolve internal disputes, distrust, and grievances; to usher in political pluralism; and to integrate economically within the global economy. The US cannot afford to continue confining Africa to the realm of its lowest priorities, while failing to take note of all the progress and achievements of the past decade, which countries such as China and India have either taken full advantage of, or taken part in. There is no better time than the present for the US to assure Africa of its full commitment to playing a more active and constructive role in the continent's rapid transformation and development.
