There are two antiviral drugs being used called Tamiflu and Relenza. However, they can have severe side effects especially in children. I will also tell you about a drug that we always had on hand when I was a child and it is called Paregoric. It is an opium based liquid which really works to stop diarrhea, vomiting, cramping, pain and cough. This allows you to eat and drink so you do not become dehydrated. H1n1 Epidemic

(High resolution version of this image for printing purposes available in "All Sizes") Also check out my other illustration on A/H1N1: www.flickr.com/photos/benheine/3750074165/ Influenza A virus subtype H1N1, also known as A(H1N1), is a subtype of influenza virus A and the most common cause of influenza (flu) in humans. Some strains of H1N1 are endemic in humans, including the strain(s) responsible for the 1918 flu pandemic which killed 50–100 million people worldwide. Less virulent H1N1 strains still exist in the wild today, worldwide, causing a small fraction of all influenza-like illness and a large fraction of all seasonal influenza. H1N1 strains caused roughly half of all flu infections in 2006. Other strains of H1N1 are endemic in pigs and in birds. In March and April 2009, hundreds of laboratory-confirmed infections and a number of deaths were caused by an outbreak of a new strain of H1N1. ------------- H1N1 Swine Flu: Barack Obama and the First Deadly Mistake By Lifegen.de The H1N1 swine flu hits the US, and for the first time President Barack Obama seems to make a deadly mistake: A disease spread simulation has emphasized that flu interventions must be imposed quickly, if they are to be effective. Researchers writing in the open access journal BMC Public Health have shown that staying at home, closing schools and isolating infected people within the home should reduce infection, but only if they are used in combination, activated without delay and maintained for a relatively long period. The President should have acted by enforcing social separation - but economic items seem to be more important. What all the President's men should have known: Professor George Milne and his colleagues from the University of Western Australia (UWA) simulated the effect of social distancing on the spread of a flu virus within a small town. Their research used a detailed, individual-based model of a real community with a population of approximately 30,000 (Albany, Australia) using simulation software engineered by UWA's Dr Joel Kelso. Milne said, "Our results suggest a critical role of combined social distancing measures in the potential control of a future pandemic. Non-pharmaceutical social distancing interventions are capable of preventing less-infectious influenza epidemics and of significantly reducing the rate of development and overall burden of the worst epidemics". The research investigated the effects, alone and in combination, of workplace non-attendance, school closure, isolating infected family members inside the home and reducing contact within the wider community. According to Milne, "While such draconian measures seem unlikely to be mandated given their impact on personal freedom, they appear to have a key role to play in delaying the development of a 'worst case' influenza epidemic. They may be critical in holding back an epidemic until vaccines are deployed on a sufficient scale that subsequent relaxation of these rigorous measures will not result in a consequential acceleration in the scale of the outbreak". The measures described must, however, be employed as soon as possible after the first individuals within the population have been infected, if not preemptively. This study found that, for an outbreak of influenza approximately as infectious as the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, the combination of all intervention measures must be introduced within 2 weeks of the first case appearing in a town or city, to prevent an epidemic developing. Delays of 2, 3 and 4 weeks resulted in final attack rates of 7%, 21% and 45% respectively. Milne concludes, "Social distancing interventions are important as they represent the only type of intervention measure guaranteed to be available against a novel strain of influenza in the early phases of a pandemic. They may be readily activated and thought of as a first line of defence in developing and developed countries alike". ------------ --> This article appeared on www.lifegen.de/

Thousands of high schools in western Japan were closed today as more than 100 cases of H1N1 flu virus, also known as swine flu, were confirmed among the student population.STORY: All junior high school and high schools were shut in Osaka and Hyogo prefectures in western Japan today. This comes after over 100 people, most of them high school students, were confirmed to be infected with the new H1N1 flu virus over the weekend. And none have record of having travelled overseas. The Osaka and Hyogo prefectures are the most populated urban centers in Japan after Tokyo. So even though none are believed to be critically ill, the governor of Osaka has urged students to stay at home after he announced the schools closure. [Toru Hashimoto, Governor of Osaka]:"To all the high school and junior high school students out there, I beg you, as governor of Osaka, that even though school is off, please refrain from leaving your homes." However, a Kobe bank teller was also confirmed to have contracted the new H1N1 flu strain today. A sense of panic was evident as millions of Monday morning commuters wore masks to get to work.In Tokyo, no risks were taken at the visitors' entrance for Japan's national parliament. Students and tourists alike were required to disinfect their hands and put on masks before taking the guided tours around the parliament buildings. To date more than 35 countries have confirmed cases of H1N1 virus, and some 60 people have died so far in Mexico from the virus.

H1n1 Data

I was discussing H1N1 with a bioinformatics friend of mine last weekend, and we ended up talking about ways that epidemiologists model transmission of disease. I wondered how some of the information that is shared voluntarily on social networks might be used to build useful models of various kinds. I'm also interested in visualizing information that isn't implicitly shared - but instead is inferred or suggested. This piece looks for tweets containing the phrases 'just landed in...' or 'just arrived in...'. Locations from these tweets are located using MetaCarta's Location Finder API. The home location for the traveling users are scraped from their Twitter pages. The system then plots these voyages over time. I'm not entirely sure where this will end up going, but I am reasonably happy with the results so far. However, this swine flu that has presented in Mexico, Texas, California, Queens NYC, London, Italy, etc. has genes of swine, avian, human, and asian flu. This is without any doubt a pandemic flu with a current case fatality estimated at 10 % plus, and rapidly is leaping across North America and to Europe. Since 1997, the H5N1 flu has spread to all continents. Genetics showed that six strains had high pathogenic case fatality rates in the range of 70% average from 25 % to 100 % case fatality rates in humans, with some clusters of human to human spread, with close physical contact. Defiencies in two amino acids needed to allow rapid attachment to human cells was found in all strains, but can be acquired by recombinants with H9N2 or H7N3 or H3N2 etc. endemic human stains that can also coinfect pigs, birds, agricultural animals, and animals in the wild. Until fall 2008, the avian flu did not optimally replicate unless it was at 106 degrees or higher, but now it has acquired the capacity to replicate easily at 98.6 Farhenheit. Drug resistance to Amantadine, Tamiflu also are the predominant strains. http://www.rense.com/general85/swine.htm

World Health Organization Director General Margaret Chan has announced the "2009 influenza pandemic" is underway.[Margaret Chan, WHO Director General]:"On the basis of available evidence and these experts assessments of the evidence, the scientific criteria for an influenza pandemic have been met. I have therefore decided to raise the level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 5 to phase 6."Chan restated the WHO's previous advice not to close borders or impose travel restrictions on people, goods or services.[Margaret Chan, WHO Director General]:"Based on the evidence, we make some recommendations. Clearly, no closure of borders, no restrictions of travel, and also no trade bans.Phase six is the highest level on the WHOs pandemic alert scale. This level reflects the geographical spread of the H1N1 virus, widely known as swine flu, but does not indicate how virulent it is.Chan says the unanimous experts' decision was based on an overall assessment in the eight most heavily hit countries Australia, Britain, Canada, Chile, Japan, Mexico, Spain and the United States that the virus is spreading in a sustained way in communities. The current H1N1 pandemic is mild with only 2 percent of infected patients having developed severe symptoms including acute pneumonia.[Margaret Chan, WHO Director General]:"WHO has been in close dialogue with influenza vaccine manufacturers. I understand that production of vaccines for seasonal influenza will be completed soon and that full capacity will be available to ensure the largest possible supply of pandemic vaccines in the months to come. The H1N1 strain of the flu first emerged in April in Mexico and the United States. It has since spread to at least 74 countries causing almost 29 thousand infections and 144 deaths. The new strain can be treated by antiviral drugs such as Tamiflu tablets and Relenza spray.
