The first swine flu death in Asia is being reported in the Philippines. A 49-year-old woman with heart and liver ailments has died after contracting the virus. The woman died at her home on Friday, June 19, two days after she first showed symptoms of the virus. A throat swab revealed that she was positive for the new flu virus. But post-autopsy results show that the death was caused by congestive heart failure and pneumonia. [Francisco Duque, Philippine Health Secretary]:"The death was not caused by A (H1N1). It was caused by congestive heart failure secondary to atherosclerotic heart disease, which means there is a blockage of major vessels of the heart. And the A (H1N1) might have caused the pneumonia and exacerbated the congestive heart failure."The Philippines has recorded 445 cases of H1N1. Health officials say more than 80 percent have fully recovered since the first case was reported on May 21. About 20 state and private schools have suspended classes for 10 days after some students got the virus after traveling to the United States, Canada, Japan, China and Hong Kong. The health department is revising measures to stop the spread of the disease. Theyre now focusing on more vulnerable people such as pregnant women, the very young and elderly and those with underlying diseases, such as diabetes, tuberculosis, kidney and liver ailments and people with HIV/AIDS.
